Exorcism (meaning - binding by oath) is the religious practice of evicting demons or other spiritual entities from a person or place which they are believed to have possessed. Depending on the spiritual beliefs of the exorcist, this may be done by causing the entity to swear an oath, performing an elaborate ritual, or simply by commanding it to depart in the name of a higher power. The practice is quite ancient and part of the belief system of many cultures and religions.
In Ohio, I can find no valid cases of exorcisms, and do not see any certified exorcists listed anywhere. Perhaps Ohio is too far from Rome, or perhaps the diagnosis of the medical and mental health professionals are greatly misdiagnosed. In either case, I would have thought Ohio would be a great gathering ground for the depraved evil spirits of this world, it is one of the worst states to live in after all.
According to the Oxford Reference Online an exorcism is the driving out of a dybbuk, demons, or evil spirits; the belief that a holy man can order the expulsion of evil spirits that have invaded a place or body of a person is ancient. Different types of exorcisms and rituals can be seen throughout different faiths too. Requested and performed exorcisms occurred rarely until the 1900's where the public saw a sharp rise due to the media attention exorcisms were getting. There was "a 750% increase in the number of Exorcisms performed between the early 1960's and the mid 1970's"
If you think exorism or possession mimics that of the movie "The Exorcist" , I suggest you seek counciling before searching for a exorcist or demonologist. It was no way near a real possession case, only an elaborate ruse to gain attention to a term which was very seldom spoke of in mainstream society and to create a shock value around it.
In Roman Catholic dogma exorcism is a ritual but not a sacrament, unlike baptism or confession. Unlike a sacrament, exorcism's "integrity and efficacy do not depend ... on the rigid use of an unchanging formula or on the ordered sequence of prescribed actions. Its efficacy depends on two elements: authorization from valid and licit Church authorities, and the faith of the exorcist." Movies like The Exorcist and The Exorcism of Emily Rose which came out in the 1970's triggered a sharp rise and need for priests to perform exorcisms daily.
The Catholic Church revised the Rite of Exorcism in January 1999, though the traditional Rite of Exorcism in Latin is allowed as an option. The act of exorcism is considered to be an incredibly dangerous spiritual task. The ritual assumes that possessed persons retain their free will, though the demon may hold control over their physical body, and involves prayers, blessings, and invocations with the use of the document Of Exorcisms and Certain Supplications. In the modern era, Catholic bishops rarely authorize exorcisms, approaching would-be cases with the presumption that mental or physical illness is more likely.
There is however a terrible failure in understanding the correct methods of a real "exorcism". Exorcism or dealing with chaotic (the word chaotic is quite valuable) supernatural beings which have the intention of domination instead of protection is where the art formed. The art is much more ancient than the catholic church would like you to believe - even older than Jesus himself. Both King David and King Solomon have a generous amount of ancient jewish literature written about them dealing with the fallen angels and dealing with spiritual presences. It is written in some texts that the original temple of solomon was put together by the hands of "demons" because of a magic signet ring that the king wore which was blessed by God and enabled him to control their actions.
Even further still , are the teachings of the ancient tribes, the indians. During the middle east and european development, the Americas were literally untouched by outsiders. When the europeans arrived here, they saw many things which were spiritually symbolic and meaningful to the American Indians - such as the Totem Poles , which were built and blessed by guardian spirits that would keep evil away from their camps. Their medicine men and elders had ancient rituals to help and heal those suffering from evil spirits and calamities. They were extremely in tuned to the spiritual world - sadly, most of this information did not make it through the countless waves of destruction by enslavery, murder and disease the europeans brought over to this country. But some did thankfully. Exorcism is a rite or ritual performed to cast out or ward off chaotic entities trying to take over another person. Native Americans know of rites and rituals, but guard most of this stuff in secrecy, and I cannot blame them for we have taken everything away from them and in truth we deserve nothing from them as a result.
If a practitioning monk or priest believes they are performing a true exorcism by using spiritual icons and reciting texts about the stations of the cross, they are not doing anything - and perhaps that is why most catholic exorsisms are wholly secret, must be approved by Rome, with the clause that when all else fails - they can simply state the person has mental or physical issues that immitate possession. As a matter of fact, almost every listed "exorcism" out there by the catholic church is actually unsubstanciated - I wonder why?
Exorcism use to be by means of barbarism , by force through methods of great physical strain and torture. Brandishing irons, whips, blood letting, symbology, water torture, stretching, burning, cutting off limbs, and the list goes on and on. This is where the original european demonologists and rites of exorcism came from, and thus is where the original exorcisms started - but the roman catholic church is not about to teach you that sort of history. The idea was simple, break down the body - through means of pain, maiming and punishment - where the evil being would no longer wish to reside with it's host, and leave it. Unfortunately for the now not so possessed person, they dont wish to stay in their body either.
True and complete physical and mental possession is something that is extremely rare - however, there are many people out there that are not even aware that they are being guided by these chaotic entities, and are. Jesus put things into a huge perspective when He exclaimed "Father forgive them, for they know not what they do". Its not even funny that people do things before thinking, and then ask the question "Why did I do that, What was I thinking" - and that's only for those people that have a higher reasoning and a concious about what they did, there's plenty that dont even think twice.
Spiritual deviance is quite seldom looked at when you have others to label a condition which is obvious abnormal behavior for a person that has control of their life: alcoholic, drug addict, schizophrenia, depression, suicidal, homicidal, etc.. All labels to a condition are just that - a term to categorize a person that fit a criteria. If you ask a professional what makes a person have that condition, they cannot answer you - because they do not know the answer. They can formulate many possibilities - but none of which can be for certain. Back in the days of the ancients, they treated these sort of conditions more appropriately than we do now. I have helped an alcoholic break free for good, I have helped a state certified schizophrenic come off their medications and function well enough to find a job and start living a normal life. These are real stories that I share, not tall tales - because the individuals are available and can testify to it. Spiritual possession is mostly one that causes deviation and attempts to gain deeper control of that person. It starts out with the "labels" and gets deeper as time marches on and the symptoms progress until the person is unable to live a full and meaningful life. If you look at all the cases of spiritual "possession" referenced in the bible - they can very much resemble any of the psycological labels we currently have.
Fortunately OASIS has someone on hand which can help in all cases where spiritual possession is suspected or identified. Exorcism is done properly, the shaman way - where God is the Creator, and Jesus is the intercessor. Believe it or not the indians knew of The Father, the Great Spirit, and some speculate that Jesus himself appeared to the indians as well to let them know of His second coming. If a shaman would need to expel an evil presence they would not do it "alone" , but call upon the ancient ancestors to help as well. With truth, knowledge, and wisdom as our guides - we have had much success.
